Celebrating 98 Years of Women’s Suffrage

August 26th is Women’s Equality Day, celebrating the 98th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. This year it is also the launch of the #VAratifyERA campaign, a grassroots effort to make Virginia the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment–and the final state needed to make the ERA the law of the land. The ERA guarantees that equal rights under law will not be denied to any person on the basis of sex, a protection not currently protected by express language in the U.S. Constitution; rather the U.S. Supreme Court, following the leadership of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, has adopted the interpretation that legal protections against sex discrimination are necessarily part of the 14th Amendment. Now more than ever, it is crucial that Virginia step up to protect women’s rights. I am proud to support the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
